Fast ForWord Program

Fast ForWord, a revolutionary approach to receptive language and auditory processing remediation is aimed at children, ages 5-12 years, who present with language-learning impairments.

Fast ForWord represents a significant breakthrough following 20 years of research by Dr. Paula Talla; a specialist in the neurological basis of language at Rutgers university and Dr. Michael Merzenich, a neuroscientist a the University of California at San Francisco. The program is based on the findings that: 1) the brain is capable of reorganizing its neural patterns and through specific adaptive training techniques, rapidly learn new skills and 2) children with language based learning difficulties process the acoustic changes within speech sounds at a much slower rate than non impaired children.

Fast ForWord consists of 7 CD ROM computer games which the children play for 1 hour and 40 minutes, 5 days a week for 6-8 weeks. Using acoustically modified speech and processing to normal speech, the software is adaptive. Each child progresses at their own rate, I.e.. the difficulty level of the listening task increases with successes and decreases with errors. Compliance is a very important factor for successful results. A "pretraining" speech and language assessment is carried out in order to determine a child's eligibility for the program. A good candidate is a child who is more than 1 standard deviation below the mean in any 1 area of speech and language (including central auditory processing). The same assessment battery is carried out "post training" in order to determine gains. results of the Fast ForWord field trial, run on 500 children across Canada and in the U.S. in "95-96", revealed dramatic improvements in a child's speech and; language levels, generally seen after years of traditional therapy, in just 6-8 weeks.

The Fast ForWord program may be offered in centre, at home, or in school, depending in the availability if the required hardware, Internet connection and staff to monitor the student. The Fast ForWord fee is comprised of 1) Scientific Learning Corporations software training license ($1150.00 Cdn plus tax) and 2) CDCO's fee for maintaining the program. The latter is dependant on the site in which the program is carried out. For further information, please contact Marie Heintzman at 905-849-7993 or visit the web site at http://www.fastforword.com

Fast ForWord Two

Staff:

Marie Heintzman, M.S., Aud (C)
Registered Audiologist

Services:

In October 1998, Scientific Learning Corporation announced their sequel to the Fast ForWord program - FastForWord Two. The CD-ROM program is available to children who have completed the Fast ForWord One program and might benefit from additional remedial help in reading and spelling. Fast ForWord Two focuses on developing phonological awareness, sound letter correspondence, word recognition, listening comprehension and verbal reading and fluency. Fast ForWord Two uses acoustically modified speech which is slightly different than that of Fast ForWord One. There are 5 exercises with a variable time option. Children play these computer exercises for 90 minutes/day, 5 days/week for 6-8 weeks. The more elaborate graphics will appeal to a wider age range.
